Polar Bear Family Activity Pack

February 27th is International Polar Bear Day so to celebrate them I’ve created some fun activity sheets! To promote team work, these pages are meant to be done as a family but can be used as a homeschool resource instead for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd graders.

How to incorporate the Polar Bear Activity Pack into Homeschool

There have been countless times where I want to change the lesson plan to something that has to do with the current holiday or trend or even just the current weather, but as soon as I have to write down how it works as homeschool I’m slapped in the face with writer’s block. I don’t want that to happen to you! So, I’ve already come up with simple explanations that you can copy/paste below.

English Language Arts

the student learned about polar bear habitats, behaviors, and adaptations through reading informational texts.

History

student gained an understanding of the historical and cultural significance polar bears have to indigenous peoples in the Arctic region.

Math

the student explored how climate change impacts polar bear food sources and how that affects the ecosystem, connecting mathematics to real-world phenomena.

Science

they learned about polar bear anatomy.

Why You’ll Love These Polar Bear Worksheets

Family Friendly – I’ve created these worksheets with multiple ages in mind. As a homeschool mom of 4 kiddos, I am aware that if one kid is doing something, there will be another asking why he doesn’t get to do it too.

Fun to do – The goal for homeschooling our babiesis to keep everything as fun as possible and to nurture their love and curiosity to learn. Your kid(s) and you will love the cool facts and fun worksheets included in this pack.

Make it Your Own – You’ll appreciate that these worksheets can be adapted to fit most ages. If your child is learning their colors then you can have them color all the dots green or if you guys are working on skip counting, have them do the dot-to-dot in multiples of 5 or 6 or whatever you want! Maybe your child wants to learn a different language, have them fill in the Polar Bear Body Parts Worksheet with another language.

Tips

  • I like to print off the whole pack then pass out 1 – 2 worksheets to each child that I think would suit their learning abilities.
  • If more than 1 child wants to do the same worksheet then I just make a copy.

Polar Bear Fun Facts

  • their skin is actually black, not white. Their fur is translucent so it appears white because it reflects visible light.
  • the polar bears scientific name means “sea bear”
  • they can be found living in 5 different countries: United States (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Greenland, and Norway
  • these guys can swim for days in open water without rest and can swim up to 6 miles per hour.
  • polar bears are classified as marine mammals and are the only bear species to be considered marine mammals.
  • male polar bears can weigh as much as 10 men. They are also twice the size of females.
  • they have a very strong sense of smell, which they use to find seal breathing-holes in the ice. Once the polar bear has found the hole, the bear will wait patiently until the seal comes up for air then attack. They can even detect a seal in the water beneath a meter (about 3 feet) of compacted snow.
  • Polar Bear mommas give live birth to 1 – 3 cubs per litter.

How to incorporate President’s Day into Homeschool

If you’re like me then you didn’t plan to incorporate this holiday into today’s lesson. If that’s the case, then you also don’t have a plan for how to explain how this will work for homeschool. No worries, I’ve already come up with simple explanations below so that you can just copy/paste.

English Language Arts

  • They demonstrated comprehension by organizing and sequencing historical events as well as presidential terms.
  • Developed vocabulary related to political terms and historical events.

History

  • Gained a deeper understanding of the sequence of U.S. presidential history because they created the timeline.
  • Identified key historical figures and their contributions to U.S. history.
  • Explored the impact of major events during different presidencies and their significance.

Math

  • Explored the concept of timelines as a visual representation of numerical and sequential data.

Social Studies

  • They developed spatial awareness and fine motor skills by cutting, pasting, and organizing the timeline elements.
a teaser photo for what the free president's day timeline printable consists of. blue background with a compass, silhouette of George Washington, and a log cabin.

Why You’ll Love these President’s Day Worksheets

Unique – The reason I created these Abraham Lincoln and George Washington worksheets is because when I was searching google for some good homeschool lessons for president’s day, I could only find sheets with basic information. Example: George Washington chopped down the cherry tree (which isn’t even true), Abraham Lincoln is on the penny, blah, blah, blah. I wanted something that would put my kids a bar higher in what they know so I created these simple, yet informative, FREE printables.

Updated 2025: Now also includes Franklin Roosevelt and John Adams. Each year I add 1-2 more presidents to the pack. Let me know in the comments which president you’d like a worksheet for next!

TIPS for Using the President’s Day Worksheets

  • if you don’t want to use the pre-written fun facts in these worksheets, then write your own and have your child paste the ones you’ve created onto the timeline instead.
  • keep the little ones intentionally occupied by giving them the included coloring page so that you can focus on on the older kiddos.
  • Want more printables?! Check out this cool Polar Bear Activity Pack
  • Watch this Youtube Short to get a peak into how we do homeschool.

Items you may need for the President’s Day Activity Pack

thomas jefferson, abe lincoln, john adams, and george washington paper dolls being held up by 2 choctaw boys for President's Day
  • U.S. PRESIDENT PAPER DOLLS

One of our favorite ways to spruce up any homeschool lesson is by bringing some sort of “toy” into the mix so for history lessons my secret weapons are these paper dolls by FAMOUS FIGURES. The kiddos looooove using what they’ve learned to bring the characters to life and it gives me a front row seat to their very educational puppet show ;).

Another good reason is that it keeps little hands busy doing something constructive while they listen to the lecture.

Cute and Simple Thanksgiving Turkey Activity for Kids – free printable

November 23, 2021 //  by thetattooedmomma//  Leave a Comment

Thankful Turkey Activity + coloring page

A cute Thanksgiving activity for parents looking for a quick, all inclusive, holiday lesson to do with the kids.

assortment of colorful target brand crayons laid across a thanksgiving activity

While digging around the internet for a quick homeschool activity to do with the kids for Thanksgiving, I found myself disappointed with the results.

The cute ones required payment and the others didn’t have enough of a learning aspect to them so I decided to create my own instead and share it with all of you.

Below you will find an adorable turkey activity that can incorporate social studies, language, creativity, and even a little science.

This cute and simple Thanksgiving turkey activity has been tailored to accommodate families with multiple ages so it’s perfect for preschool – middle school students.

  • Preschool – for preschool kids, use the Thanksgiving Turkey Activity COLORING PAGE. The cartoon is simple enough to keep them interested but also allows the parents to work on letter and number recognition.
  • k thru 3 – The Thankful Turkey Activity worksheet is perfect for kids from kinder through 3rd grade. For younger kids that are still learning how to write, have them write what their thankful for using just one word on each feather. Then there is plenty of room for older kids to write a full sentence on each feather.
  • 4th thru 8th grade – After the more advanced kids have written what they’re thankful for on each feather, have them choose 1 feather to expand on. Ask them to write about why they are thankful for it and how it impacts their everyday lives. Ex: survival, homestead, family, financial, fun, etc.

Below is an example of what my 3 year old did one year. She was the inspiration to me making the Thanksgiving Turkey Coloring Pages since she wasn’t able to cut everything out for the Thankful Turkey Activity.

thanksgiving turkey coloring page that is already colored in with pink, blue, and brown crayon.

supplies

  • scissors
  • crayons
  • glue or tape

step by step guide

  1. print out your Thankful Turkey by clicking one or both of the options below.
thankful turkey free printable activity
thanksgiving turkey coloring page free printable
  1. draw the wattle

educational fun fact: All turkeys have wattles but only the males gobble. The males use their special gobble noise to attract females.

I chose to not include the wattle in the printable so the kids learn this as one of the identifiers for a turkey.

line drawing of a turkey with a wattle being drawn on
  1. Color the rest of it in

I chose more traditional Thanksgiving turkey colors but feel free to really get creative with it.

line drawing of a turkey colored in using brown, black, and orange crayon

For funny reels and daily extras, follow me on instagram

  1. fill in the blanks

write down what you’re thankful for in the feathers then color those in too. It’s ok to go outside the lines because you’ll be cutting everything out in the next step.

  1. cut, assemble, and glue

cut your turkey and the feathers out then glue the feathers to the back of the turkey. It might be easier for the younger ones to just tape everything on.

once you put it all together, post it to instagram and tag thetattooed.momma to be featured in stories!

Easy Corn Husk Doll Tutorial – Native American

September 25, 2021 //  by thetattooedmomma//  3 Comments

Easy Corn Husk Doll Tutorial – Native American

Easy Native American Corn Husk Doll tutorial you and your kids’ will love while learning a little about Choctaw tradition.

5 Native American corn husk dolls. 3 male 2 female all with various colored hair ranging from white, black, brown, and orange.

These little dolls are the perfect STEAM activity for your kids. Although we didn’t originally start making these with the intent of it being a homeschool lesson, it sure did turn out that way.

Science: The kids were able to see cause and effect from when you dip the corn husk in water.

Technology: Learning how the Native Americans recycled every bit of the corn to keep their carbon footprint as low as possible.

Engineer: Little hands learning how to construct a toy from things around the house.

Art: Aside from building these traditional dolls, my older ones started seeing what other creations they could come up with. Planes, eagles, babies…all made from their imagination.

Math: basic counting skills -> 5 cornhusks, 20 pieces of hair, etc.

…and a fun, traditional story to go along with it.

5 native american corn husk dolls laying on a piece of natural wood.

scroll down for video

Supplies

  • 5 corn husks
  • yarn (in any color you want the doll’s hair to be)
  • scissors
  • container of water

Instructions

Step 1. fan 4 cornhusks out onto your work surface.

Step 2. cut 20 pieces of yarn to use as the doll’s hair and place them in the center of the fanned out corn husks.

NOTE: It’s better to make your hair long to begin with then trim at the end if necessary.

Step 3. Using the corn husks as a tortilla, roll the yarn up like a burrito.

Step 4. Tie a double knot towards the top to secure the yarn and corn husks together.

NOTE: You should have a little stem at the top now.

Step 5. Pretend your corn husk is a banana and grab “the stem” then start pulling the corn husk flaps down – just like your peeling a banana.

TIP: DIP YOUR DOLL IN THE WATER FOR 3 SECONDS TO MAKE IT EASY TO MANIPULATE.

Step 6. Decide how long or short you want your doll’s head to be and tie your second knot.

Step 7. Take your 5th piece of corn husk and roll it up like a taco all by itself. Then tie a knot at each end to make the doll’s hands.

Step 8. Turn the doll to the side and split it in half. Then stuff the arms up into the body

Step 9. Decide how long or short you want the body to be then tie a double knot.

You can choose to be done here or keep reading if you want a boy doll.

The First Corn Husk Doll – a Native American Tale

The first corn husk doll was made by the Corn Spirit. The doll was made with a beautiful face and played well with the Native children but the doll was told over and over how beautiful she was. Hearing this often, she began to become very conceited then started to treat the children badly that would play with her.

The Corn Spirit warned the doll not to be so vain but the doll didn’t listen. So to teach the doll a lesson about humbleness and humility, the Corn Spirit took the beautiful features away from the doll.

Now,  corn husk dolls remain faceless to remind people not to ever think they are better than others.

Bonus Story – The Gift of Corn

Long ago, 2 Choctaw men were camping along the Alabama River when they heard a beautiful but sad sound. They followed the sound until they came upon Ohoyo Osh Chishba, Unknown Woman, standing on an dirt mound. The men asked how they could help her so she answered with “I’m hungry.”

The men gave her all their food but Unknown Woman only ate a little then thanked them with a promise.

She said, “Tell no one you saw me and I will ask the Great Spirit to give you a gift. Then return here at the new moon.” So the Choctaw men went home and said nothing.
